Solid Gold vs. Vermeil: Make the Right Investment for Timeless Elegance

What’s the Difference?

With so many jewelry options waiting in your cart, it can be tempting to opt for the more affordable choice of plated jewelry instead of real gold. Let's take a closer look at the materials your jewelry is made of to help you make an informed decision.

Vermeil

Vermeil is made by plating silver with 2.5 microns of gold. For a piece to be considered vermeil, the purity of the gold plating must be at least 10 karats, and the thickness must be at least 2.5 microns, which is approximately 0.001 mm.

Vermeil is the more affordable option in the short term, but as with many things, the long term is where you see the difference. Vermeil has no long term value as it can not be melted for its gold content. It also tarnishes from the inside out, making it highly prone to tarnish that cannot be brought back to life.

Solid Gold

Unlike vermeil, solid gold jewelry is strictly gold alloy through and through. Solid gold may be more expensive than vermeil, but here are a few reasons why it's worth the investment.

1) Lasts a lifetime - Solid gold jewelry is made to endure. Unlike vermeil or plated pieces, which can wear down and tarnish over time, solid gold retains its integrity and shine indefinitely. This makes it an ideal choice for heirlooms that can be passed down through generations, maintaining their beauty and value as family treasures. Whether it’s a wedding ring, a cherished bracelet, or a necklace, solid gold pieces can tell a story that spans decades, making them much more than just accessories.

2) Sweat and waterproof - One of the significant advantages of solid gold is its resilience to everyday activities. You don’t have to worry about taking off your jewelry when you shower, swim, or exercise, as you would with plated pieces. Solid gold doesn’t tarnish or corrode when exposed to water, sweat, or the elements, making it perfect for daily wear. This durability ensures that your jewelry looks as good as new, no matter how active your lifestyle. Whether you're hitting the gym, relaxing on the beach, or simply washing your hands, your solid gold pieces remain pristine.

3) Holds its value - Solid gold is not just a beautiful addition to your jewelry collection; it’s also a smart investment. Gold has been a valuable and sought-after material for centuries, and its value tends to increase over time. Unlike costume jewelry, which can lose its appeal and value over time, solid gold always appreciates in value. This makes buying solid gold jewelry a financially sound decision. Not only do you get to enjoy wearing stunning pieces, but you also hold onto something that has intrinsic value and can be sold or traded if needed.
